The New York Times is reporting that the Syriza party – a coalition of leftist parties in Greece – ‘disdains’ all-inclusive resorts because they keep tourists away from local businesses. The party is in a strong position leading up to the Greek ******** on Jan.25 and has proposed to limit all-inclusives if elected.
The ruling New Democracy party has also proposed measures that would impact the tourism industry. They have proposed to double the value-added tax on hotel accommodation to 13%, with the food tax also being a hot political issue.
Tourism in Greece rebounded 20% in 2014 with a record 21.5 million arrivals after a huge plunge over the financial ******. Some of these proposed measures threaten the fragile recovery in the travel and tourism sector in Greece.
